Best Digital Marketing Agencies In Malaysia Compared

The best digital marketing agencies in Malaysia on our scores are Primal at 8.0 out of 10, Exabytes at 7.4 and Newnormz at 6.7. We scored each agency out of 10 on nine public facts, from the services it sells and its Google reviews to whether buyers find it in search and in an AI assistant, then averaged the nine scores.

Key Takeaways

  • Primal scores highest of the 10 agencies, at 8.0 out of 10. Exabytes follows on 7.4 and Newnormz on 6.7.
  • Each agency is scored out of 10 on nine public facts. They run from the services it sells and the tools it reports with to its Google and Clutch reviews and whether buyers find it.
  • Most of these agencies are hard to find for their own trade. Six of the 10 did not show up in four Google searches or four AI answers about agencies in their field.
  • Nine of the 10 list no tool of their own for tracking results. They name another company's tools, or none.
  • AI assistants take their agency lists from directories. Elevate, Primal's AI Visibility Tracker, logged 3,693 answers across 66 queries about agencies and search over the last month, and Clutch was cited in about 4 in 10.

Where Lists Of The Best Agencies Come From

Most buyers start a shortlist of digital marketing agencies from a directory. Artificial intelligence (AI) assistants such as ChatGPT and Google AI Overviews start theirs from the same places. Search Google for the best digital marketing agencies in Malaysia, and Clutch’s list comes first. DesignRush, The Manifest and the Semrush agency list sit further down the page.

Elevate, Primal’s AI Visibility Tracker, logged 3,693 answers across 66 queries about agencies and search over the last month. Clutch was cited in about 4 in 10, more than any agency’s own site.

A directory’s order tells you less than it seems. Clutch’s list opens in an order it calls Sponsored. Its methodology page puts agencies with its paid badges above the ones it ranks on reviews. The lists also agree on few names. On the first pages of Clutch, DesignRush and The Manifest we found 86 agencies, and only 8 were on all three.

When you compare agencies, score each one on the same facts. The order then shows why one agency sits above another.

How We Scored Each Agency

We started with the 97 agencies on Google’s first page for this search. They came from the four directory lists there, from agency pages that rank there and from the first version of this page. We kept those with a live site that sells digital marketing in Malaysia and a Google Business Profile that includes a marketing or advertising category. Then we kept the nine with the most Google reviews and added Primal, which has fewer.

Each agency gets a score out of 10 on each of the nine things below. Its score in the table is the average of the nine, to one decimal place.

  1. Core services: 10 for live pages that sell all three of search engine optimisation (SEO), paid media and social media, each by name. Paid media means Google Ads. Social media can be paid or organic, so a page that sells Facebook, Instagram or TikTok ads qualifies. Two of the three score 5, and one or none scores 0.
  2. Own measurement: 10 when the agency’s site lists its own tool for tracking or reporting results. Another company’s tool that it reports from scores 5, and none scores 0. Primal’s are ElevateSEO™, its AI visibility tracker and INSTINCT®.
  3. Published guidance: 10 for 20 or more guides or posts on digital marketing on the agency’s own site, 8 for 10 to 19, 5 for 1 to 9, 0 for none.
  4. Google reviews: 10 for four and a half stars or more from 100 or more reviews on its Google Business Profile. Four and a half stars from 50 or more scores 8, four stars from 10 or more scores 5, and fewer scores 0.
  5. Clutch: 10 for a listing with 10 or more reviews, 5 for 1 to 9, 2 for a listing with none, 0 for no listing.
  6. Track record: 10 for 10 or more years in business, 5 for 5 to 9 years, 0 for under 5 years or no published founding year.
  7. Team and offices: 10 for 50 or more people and more than one office, and 8 for one of the two. A team of 10 to 49 scores 5, and fewer or no published figure scores 0.
  8. Transparency: 10 for publishing both client results with figures and prices, 5 for one of the two, 0 for neither.
  9. Shows up for its own trade: the average of two halves, rounded to a whole number. One half is how many of four Google searches show the agency’s own site in the first 10 results. The searches are for digital marketing, performance marketing and SEO agencies in Malaysia, and a directory page about the agency does not qualify. The other half is how many of four buyer questions to the AI assistant Perplexity, on the day we scored, mention the agency. Each half scores 10 for all four, 8 for three, 5 for two, 3 for one and 0 for none.

A founding year, team size or office list found only on a directory such as Clutch is scored as not published. The table lists the agencies in order of average score. When two agencies tie, the one with more Google reviews goes first.

How To Check A Digital Marketing Agency Yourself

Start from the channel you need, then check each name on your shortlist against the facts in the table. Most of the checks take a few minutes each.

  1. Write down the channel you are hiring for. Search, pay per click (PPC) ads, social media marketing, content marketing and web design are different jobs. The lists mix agencies that lead with each one.
  2. Read each agency’s service pages and check that it sells your channel by name.
  3. Read the verified reviews on its Google Business Profile and its Clutch listing, with their dates.
  4. Ask for the agency’s registration number. Look it up on SSM e-Info, the portal of the Companies Commission of Malaysia (SSM).
  5. Check a Google Partner claim in Google’s Partners directory. Set its filter to all partners, because it shows Premier Partners first.
  6. Ask how the agency reports results, and ask for a sample report with the client’s name removed.
  7. Ask ChatGPT, Gemini or Perplexity your own buyer question. Note which agencies each answer mentions and which sites it cites.
  8. Keep your ad and analytics accounts in your company’s name, and add the agency as a user.

What AI Answers Cite Beyond Your Website

AI answers about a business cite many sites besides its own. Elevate, Primal’s AI Visibility Tracker, logged 16,543 AI answers across 172 queries about 12 brands in 12 industries over the last month. A brand’s own website was cited in only about a quarter of the answers about it. A competitor’s site was cited about as often.

The chart below shows how many of those brands had each kind of source cited in their AI answers. Sites that list and compare businesses appear for almost every brand.

Bar chart of how many of 12 brands had each kind of source cited in their AI answers: their own website 12, marketplaces and comparison sites 11, Facebook 8, government registers and regulators 6

Facebook was the social site cited most often for 8 of the brands, Google’s own Business Profile and Maps results showed up for 7, and a government register or regulator for 6. When you brief an agency, ask which of these listings it will look after, along with your website.

Frequently Asked Questions About Digital Marketing Agencies In Malaysia

How Were The Agencies On This List Chosen?

We took every agency on the lists that rank on Google’s first page for this search. We added the agencies whose own pages rank there and those in the first version of this page. We kept those with a live site that sells digital marketing in Malaysia and a Google Business Profile that includes a marketing or advertising category. Then we kept the nine with the most Google reviews and added Primal.

Are Directory Rankings Paid?

Partly. Clutch and DesignRush both open their lists in a sponsored order, so paid listings come first. Under that, each site ranks agencies on reviews and other factors. You can switch to that order, for example by sorting Clutch by Clutch Rank.

How Many Digital Marketing Agencies Are There In Malaysia?

There is no official figure. When we checked, Clutch listed 404 companies under digital marketing in Malaysia and DesignRush listed 121. Each list holds only the agencies with a profile on that site.

How Do I Check That A Malaysian Agency Is A Registered Company?

Ask for its registration number and look it up on SSM e-Info. The registered name should match the name on your contract and your invoices. Clutch also checks registration before it gives a Verified badge, and only agencies that pay for the badge carry one.

How Do I Compare A Few Marketing Agencies That All Propose Very Different Things?

Customers often ask us how to compare agencies whose proposals look nothing alike. Compare them on which one finds the most important problem in your account, and how it found it. When a proposal says something in your set-up is broken, check that claim with your own team. Then ask each agency what it has done for a business like yours, in the measure you use, such as cost per lead.

Does An Agency That Handles My Customer Data Have To Follow The PDPA?

Yes, when it processes personal data on your behalf. The Personal Data Protection (Amendment) Act 2024 added that duty for data processors. A processor must meet the security principle of the Personal Data Protection Act 2010 (PDPA). Ask the agency how it stores, shares and deletes the customer lists you give it.
