What Google AI Mode Is And How It Picks Its Sources
Google AI Mode is the chat-style search inside Google Search. It splits a question into several smaller searches, runs them at once and writes one answer that links to pages from Google's normal index. It has been rolling out in Malaysia since August 2025 and works in Malay, and the pages it cites come from Google's usual ranking systems, so getting cited is search engine optimisation (SEO) work.
Key Takeaways
- Most AI answers skip the brand's own site. Over the last month Elevate, Primal's AI Visibility Tracker, logged 16,543 AI answers across 172 queries about 12 brands, and a brand's own website was cited in only about a quarter of the answers about it.
- Rank for the questions buyers ask next. Google says AI Mode splits a question into smaller searches and cites pages its core ranking systems retrieve from the normal index.
- Listings need the same care as your website. In the same data, marketplaces and comparison sites were cited for 11 of the 12 brands, and Google's own Business Profile and Maps results for most of them.
- AI Mode works in English and Malay. AI Mode has been rolling out in Malaysia in English since August 2025, and Google's AI Mode help page lists Malay among its languages.
- Read Search Console over a whole month. Its Generative AI performance report shows how often AI Mode and AI Overviews display each of your pages.
What We See In AI Answers
Google AI Mode answers a question by running many searches at once. It then cites the pages it finds. In our data on AI answers, a brand’s own website is only one of the pages cited. Over the last month, Elevate, Primal’s AI Visibility Tracker, logged 16,543 AI answers across 172 queries about 12 brands in 12 industries. A brand’s own site was cited in about a quarter of the answers about it.
The other sources were mostly places where buyers compare and check, such as a competitor’s site, marketplaces, review sites, government registers and Facebook.
Google says AI Mode takes its pages from the same search index as the rest of Search. The same core systems rank those pages. So I would expect AI Mode to lean on the same kinds of sources.
For a business, that means two jobs. The first is ordinary SEO on your own pages. They should answer the smaller questions inside a buyer’s question, and Google must be able to index them. The second is keeping your listings and profiles right in the other places an answer reads. Then read your results over a whole month.
What Google AI Mode Is
Google AI Mode is a chat-style search inside Google Search. You ask a question and get one written answer, with links to the pages behind it. You can then ask a follow-up, and AI Mode keeps the first question in mind.
Google’s AI Mode help page lists the ways to open it. You can go to google.com/ai, tap the AI Mode tab on a Google results page, or open it in the Google app. Questions can be typed or spoken, and you can add a photo or a file. Google’s Gemini models write the answers.
How AI Mode Differs From AI Overviews
AI Overviews and AI Mode are separate features that draw on the same index. An AI Overview is a short summary at the top of a normal results page, on searches where Google judges it will help. AI Mode is a tab you choose, made for longer questions and follow-ups. Google’s page on AI features and your website says the two may use different models and techniques, so one question can get different links in each.
So measure them separately where you can.
Is Google AI Mode Available In Malaysia
Yes. Google began rolling AI Mode out in Malaysia in English in August 2025, and it works in Malay as well.
That month, Google said it was expanding AI Mode to many more countries and territories in English. A few days later, Lowyat.NET reported that the rollout had reached people in Malaysia and was arriving in stages. Google’s AI Mode help page now lists Malaysia among the places where AI Mode works, and Malay among its languages.

How Google AI Mode Picks Its Sources
AI Mode runs several related searches and cites the pages Google’s ranking systems return for them. Google calls this query fan-out. Its help page says AI Mode splits a question into subtopics and searches for each one at the same time. It then brings the results together in one answer.
Google’s guide to generative AI features explains where the pages come from. Google’s core ranking systems retrieve relevant, current pages from the normal search index. The model writes its answer from those pages and links to the ones that support it. The guide also calls this step grounding. In the guide’s example, a question about a lawn full of weeds might fan out into searches on weedkillers and on stopping weeds.

The help page says AI Mode may show a list of links instead of an answer when it is not confident in one. With Personal Intelligence switched on, it can also draw on that person’s past searches. Two people can ask the same question and get different answers.
Which Pages AI Answers Cite
AI answers cite the pages that help a buyer compare and check. In our data, a competitor’s site was cited about as often as the brand’s own. Marketplaces and comparison sites showed up in the answers for 11 of the 12 brands. Facebook was the most-cited social site for 8 of them. Government registers showed up for 6, such as the body that checks a university’s courses.
The chart puts the brand’s own site beside its nearest competitor. For the typical brand, the two are cited in about the same share of answers.

All 12 brands had their own website among the sources, so the site still matters. Google’s own Business Profile and Maps results were cited for most of the brands too. So your Business Profile feeds the AI answer as well as the map.
In a second set of 3,693 answers across 66 queries about agencies and search, the general SEO questions cited publishers and Google’s own pages and mentioned no agency.
My reading is that the answer cites whatever page settles the reader’s question. On a buyer’s question, that is often a listing, a marketplace or a review site. On a how-to question, it is the page that explains the topic best, whoever owns it.
How To Get Cited In Google AI Mode
A page gets cited in Google AI Mode when Google can index it and may show a snippet from it. It also has to rank for one of the smaller searches inside a buyer’s question.
People call work for AI search answer engine optimisation (AEO) or generative engine optimisation (GEO). Google’s guide says that from Google Search’s side it is still SEO. I agree.
- Check that Google can cite the page. Google’s AI features page says a page needs to be indexed and eligible to show a snippet. It sets no other technical requirement. Remove any nosnippet tag you did not mean to set, and make sure robots.txt lets Googlebot crawl the page.
- Answer the follow-up questions on the same page. If a buyer would next ask about cost, timing or how to choose, answer it there. Google’s guide warns against making a separate page for every fan-out variation to manipulate results. It treats that as scaled content abuse under its spam policies.
- Keep your listings up to date. A complete, correct profile on the sites in your category can matter as much as your next blog post. Keep your Google Business Profile, Facebook page and product data current too. Google’s guide says AI answers can include local business and product details.
- Add something only you can say. Google’s guide asks for content that is not a commodity, such as first-hand experience, your own data and a clear point of view.
- Read the results over a month. AI Mode may show a list of links when it is not confident in an answer. Personal Intelligence can also change the answer for each person. One check on one day can mislead.
How To See Google AI Mode In Search Console
Open the Generative AI performance report in Search Console. It shows how often AI Overviews and AI Mode displayed your pages, by page, country, device and date. Pick your country in the Countries tab. Then sort the Pages tab by impressions to see which pages Google’s AI features use.
Under Settings, leave your site included in the Search generative AI control, which is the default. Google’s guide says a site must be included to appear in these features. A separate post explains how to measure AI search visibility each month, with the tools that report mentions and citations.
What You Can Skip
Google’s guide also lists work that AI Mode does not need. Google Search does not use llms.txt files or other markup made only for AI. Content does not need splitting into small chunks. Google’s generative AI features need no special schema.org markup either.
What Google AI Mode Means For Your Search Work
AI Mode takes its sources from the same index as the rest of Google. In our data, a brand’s own site was one source among several in AI answers, beside the listings and profiles buyers use to compare. So the work is good SEO on the questions a buyer asks next, plus care for those listings. Read the results over a whole month. A separate post covers AI Overviews in more depth, and another explains answer engine optimisation across ChatGPT, Gemini and Google.
Primal was founded in 2015 and has offices in Kuala Lumpur, Bangkok and Singapore. Our AI SEO team works on getting brands cited in Google AI Mode and AI Overviews, as part of their SEO.
Frequently Asked Questions About Google AI Mode
Is Google AI Mode the same as Gemini?
No. AI Mode is part of Google Search and runs on Google’s Gemini models. The Gemini app is Google’s separate assistant, outside Search. An AI Mode answer links to pages from Google’s search index.
Can I use Google AI Mode in Malay?
Yes. Malay is on the language list of Google’s AI Mode help page. Malaysia is on the same page’s country list, so people here can use AI Mode in Malay or in English.
Does Google AI Mode change SEO?
Not in Google’s view. Google’s guide says work for AI search, whatever it is called, is still SEO from Google Search’s side. What changes is how many questions a page has to answer, because AI Mode also searches for the follow-ups behind the main question.
How do I stop my website appearing in Google AI Mode?
Set the Search generative AI control in Search Console to exclude your site. Google says your links and content then leave AI Overviews and AI Mode, usually within a day or two. Answers still draw on other sites. The control is not used as a ranking signal for the rest of Search, and I would keep the site included for almost every business.
